Marcia McReynolds is a lifelong educator. When she learned listening in order to become a volunteer mediator in her community, she immediately started observing and taking notes about what she had to do, inwardly and outwardly, to become a better listener so that she could later teach people how to listen herself. Many of these notes are contained in The Listening Cards which she created originally as a teaching tool.
The Listening Cards have since been used and purchased by a wide variety of people and organizations for improving their and their employee and students' listening skills: couples, HR departments, hospitals, mediation centers, counseling centers, schools, colleges, coaches, police departments and prisons. They have been sent to folks all over the world, and have been included as a teaching tool in classrooms in colleges and high schools.
The Listening Cards are divided into “Skills to Learn” and “Habits to Limit.” Each card has a graphic which reflects the energetic aspect of the skill or habit, and a highly crystallized and memorable insight into how each skill is important and each habit unnecessary and unhelpful when communicating.
What others have said about The Listening Cards:
“I wish I had known about your workshops and cards before my wife and I spent all those thousands of dollars and hundreds of house on counseling that didn’t even fix the problem between us. This is what the problem was: neither of us knew how to listen to the other! These cards get to the heart of the matter fast.”
“We use these for our communication skills classes. Soon as people start reading them, you can hear people gasping and groaning all over the room when they recognize their bad listening habits described in the cards. They [the Listening Cards] are a real eye opener.”
“The Listening Cards are a tool to remind us what we need to be doing and a "conscience" to remind us of the barriers to listening that we create. I
pull out the cards and look at them with my two teens and am planning to
give them to a work group I supervise. All of us have a deep need to be
heard - which means we have an equal need to develop our ability to listen
mindfully.”
Susie Bacon
“One thing I learned is that if we all listened to those that are closest to us like we listen to a stranger the world would be a better place.” Tammy Martin
“The Listening Cards are the way to begin to listen privately and simply.”
“This is the best communication skills training I’ve ever been through.” 62 year- old retired executive
